The rain held off until the afternoon on Saturday 12 May, leaving conditions just perfect for a community run in support of Fairfield Park Lower School in the morning.

It was going to be good whatever the weather, though, wasn’t it? The second annual Fairfield run was sold out weeks before the event, with 375 people registering to run 1k and 215 – including children as young as five – competing in the 5k race.

The 1k was untimed and ‘just for fun’; the winner of the 5k, which was timed by the North Herts Road Runners, was Phillip Gostelow with a time of 0:18:44. Second place went to Steven Bennett in 0:19:14, and Daniel Briggs took third place with a time of 0:19:58. Last year’s organiser and the event’s creator, Steve Foster, was able to compete this year and came an impressive fourth in 0:20:24.

With race fees, contributions from the food stalls and takings from the popular ‘fun zone’ – a new addition thanks to this year’s organisers Ian and Eimear Murton – the day raised an incredible £3,200 for Fairfield Park Lower School. An amount, and an event, that the Murtons, the PTA, and everyone else who volunteered or supported should be very proud of.
