It is with sadness that we have learnt of the death of a Fairfield pioneer, Lynn Langstaff, following a short illness.

Lynn and her husband, Dr Rod Langstaff, lived in Bronte Avenue and they were prominent in starting the Fairfield Park Residents Association; Lynn was also an active member of the social committee.

In pre-Community Hall days, various fundraisers were held that helped to provide outdoor events such as the annual Teddy Bears’ Picnics on the Park and to raise money for the spring bulbs that are still much admired in locations around Fairfield Park.

Small social events were often held in people’s houses because of a lack of other amenities and the Langstaffs operated an open-house policy, frequently welcoming newcomers to Fairfield.

When Rod retired as a Letchworth GP they returned to his native Northumberland. Lynn herself was a children’s nurse in the Letchworth area.

The couple have kept in touch with the area and we send Rod, and Lynn’s family, our condolences.
