Back in July 2020 we featured an article researched and written by Stephen McKenna MBE about one of the graves in the Fairfield Hospital cemetery. As a military man himself, Stephen was drawn to this military grave, which stands apart from the others, and curious to learn more about its occupant. He established that Sierzant Antoni Gajewski, a Polish Airman, had died in Fairfield Hospital (parts of which were in use as a military hospital at the time) on 10 January 1941 after being discharged from the RAF on medical grounds almost six months earlier. He also noted that the headstone incorrectly recorded the date of death as 10 February 1941. As a result of Stephen’s research, a new headstone has now been erected showing the correct date. If you would like to read the original article in full, it can be found on our website.
