We set up a Craft Group within our WI but were delayed in our project due to Covid. This year we resumed meeting in one of our member’s house once a month.

We had seen the efforts of churches and charities in other public places, where they had ‘yarn bombed’ their area with colourful displays of poppies. We wanted to do similar.

We decided to make a display that could be a permanent reminder and form a colourful backdrop for the Fairfield Remembrance Service in November. The poppies are mounted on plastic-covered fencing that, hopefully, can come out every year.

We enjoyed a cup of coffee and a natter while we either knitted or crotched poppies. We needed a lot of them! We decided to incorporate some purple ones to remember all the animals and birds who lost their lives supporting our armed forces over the decades.

We may carry on making poppies for an additional display and also to sell at the Fairfield Remembrance Service with proceeds going to the Royal British Legion.

In the past we have made hats for the Premature Baby Unit at Lister Hospital and have now started making blankets for the Unit.
