Apple Day is a community event started over 10 years ago when a group of residents became upset by seeing the apples from our amazing orchards were being left to rot on the ground. Plenty were picked for pies and cakes but many more were being wasted. What could be done?
Apple Day was born! A free celebration of our orchards and their amazing harvest.
Over the years from simple beginnings, focussing on apple pressing, juicing and cider production, the event has grown into the largest event hosted by Fairfield village, with food stalls, music, dancers, bouncy castles and much more!
We were so lucky to have the use of the large area behind the Community Hall as our venue, the water and the electricity were provided by the Community Hall and the land, which is managed by the Fairfield Hall Management Company FHMC (the old hospital), was generously shared with everyone free of charge.
This year, however there may be no 10th Apple Day as there has been a demand from the FHMC for a payment to use the land. As the event has always been organised free of charge to residents, the Parish Council did not feel able to use tax payers money to pay to use the land.
Last year, the ninth annual Fairfield Apple Day was the biggest yet, with Morris dancing and ferret racing taking centre stage on the cricket pitch while the serious business of apple chopping and pressing dominated the area behind the community hall as usual. Food, drink and craft stalls, children’s rides and inflatables and a dog agility course (not to mention free samples of Fairfield apple juice) kept the crowds happy and the event was well attended from start to finish.
