Hitchin Road re-opened to traffic just a few hours behind schedule on the evening of Friday 7 December after a week’s closure. However, in the cold light of Saturday morning it was clear that the work was not complete. An initial promise to resurface the road on Sunday 9 December was not kept, but residents are assured that this and the installation of pelican crossings can now be completed during off-peak hours, meaning any future traffic lights will only be in operation between 9am and 3pm.

In the meantime serious concerns have been raised for those schoolchildren (and parents) who need to cross the road to access the Ruskin Drive school site. With Christmas plays in full swing this week, this has been happening at all times of the school day, not just at the usual drop-off and pick-up times, and parents have reported feeling very vulnerable thanks to the lack of footpaths as well as crossings.

Residents are encouraged to address their concerns to CBC in order to get the situation resolved as quickly as possible, and not to take out their frustrations on the site workers. Drivers are also asked to be particularly aware of people attempting to cross the road at all times of day.
