The inaugural ‘Coupe de Fairfield’, a 6-a-side football tournament that was the brainchild of Harry Wilkinson, took place on 20 July at the Pendleton Centre, with teams of all ages and abilities competing in the summer sunshine.
Fairfield Vets – local Fairfield residents Adam Knight, Ian Cunningham, Daniel Briggs, Chris Jarvis, Doug Peters and Ian Finch – surprised everyone including themselves and managed to make it to the semi-finals, narrowly missing out on a place in the final. They have promised to enter next year and “win the lot”.
Local resident Gabriel Radu, who runs Sunday League team Letchworth Utd FC, was unlucky to not make it out of the group stages. The same story with Jamie Derby and his team Bushy FC.
The final was contested by FC St Johns (Hitchin) v The Platform (Letchworth) – the game could not be settled in normal time and went on to penalties, with The Platform eventually securing the win.
Well done to Harry Wilkinson for organising the event, and thank you to everyone who helped out: Adam Morris, Archie, Alfie, Elliott, Carlton, Chunkidino (Charlie Smith), TC, Danny Briggs, Kieran, Brad Ward, Mark Brownfield. Thanks also to everyone who took part and made the day a success.
