Following feedback from our Ukrainian guests and their host families in Fairfield, and also those residing in Hitchin and Letchworth, the Fairfield Community Hall team has set up a regular coffee afternoon that will run every Monday between 1pm and 3pm.

The purpose of the ‘hub’ is firstly to provide a safe and open space in which Ukrainian families new to the area can meet and connect with one another, and secondly to help them practise their English by mixing with local people.

With that in mind, Fairfield Community Hall provides refreshments and seating areas, sets up table tennis tables for those who prefer something more active, and puts out toys for the younger children. A group of volunteers serves refreshments from the kitchen, and circulates to socialise with the guests.

There have been two successful afternoons so far, averaging 25–30 guests each time. The hub is in desperate need of some more volunteers, both to help serve refreshments and to speak with the guests. A rota will be devised so that it’s not necessary to commit to being there every week. If you are able to help, please email admin@fairfieldcommunityhall.co.uk.

The hall team would also gratefully receive baked goods to serve at the hub – if there are any bakers out there who would like to donate a cake, please also get in touch using the email address above.
